Here you will find some online resources for math. A lot of these are free and some might be a little too easy or too advanced, but I’m sure there can be some useful tools here. I’ve also included some non-math sites and stuff that might be helpful to other teachers.


Khan Academy - This site is known by almost all students and has pretty much everything you need in terms of videos and courses. Navigate to your grade and go through the videos while also answering questions along the way. If you prefer to just watch the videos, you can always check out their YouTube channel here: Khan Academy YouTube

ALEKS - All of my students at DMS know about this site and luckily it’s free for them. Students can work through a curriculum after completing an initial knowledge check. From there, their path is optimized to work on grade-level content still within their zone of proximal development.

Amazing Educational Resources - This is a list of companies offering free subscriptions / resources during the school closure.

Mathantics - Mathantics has a ton of video tutorials which include topics that cover a lot of Algebra and middle school content.

BrainPOP - BrainPOP has a lot of cool animated videos for all subjects and their math content is especially cool. Currently, BrainPOP is offering free access to to schools and families impacted by school closures.

MathTV - This has thousands of math videos with a huge range. The Math Fundamentals course will be the most relevant for middle school students.

Numberphile - Numberphile is a popular YouTube channel that focuses on numbers. Not a ton of middle school math content specifically, but definitely a lot of cool videos about numbers and answers bigger math questions.

Figure This - They have challenges for middle school students and emphasizes critical thinking skills. You can find interesting math challenges that middle-schoolers can do at home with their families

Virtual School Day (Varsity Tutors) - Nearly 200 free, live K-12 classes available all day long intended to help parents fill their children’s day with enriched learning. 

Varsity Learning Tools - More than 250,000 free practice problems in over 200 subjects from Varsity Tutors. Contains helpful Common Core practice tests.

PBS Learning Media - You can choose a grade level to view interesting videos about how math is related to the real world alongside interactive lessons and activities.

Chrome Canvas - A simple browser app that lets you doodle or write out math problems. It’s especially great with touch screens and it automatically saves to your Google account.

Teacher Created Materials - TCM has a lot of free learn-at-home resources.

Illustrative Mathematics - This site has a huge amount of lesson ideas and lesson plans for middle school math teachers. Its problem-based curriculum sparks discussion and enjoyment of mathematics.

Scholastic - Lessons and ideas for teachers

Scratch - This is an awesome site for people who want to start coding with very simple drag and drop blocks rather than typing out code.

Code Club - This site also has Scratch projects, but expands on that by having project-based learning and has other programming languages such as Python and HTML.
